Visit to the Republic of Ghana by the Oxford Africa Society (9th-19th September, 2018)

The Oxford University Africa Society (AfriSoc) hosted the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo during the Oxford Africa Conference 2018 where he delivered a keynote speech under the conference theme Beyond the Rhetoric: Catalysing an Era of Concrete Action. The President during this visit extended a casual invitation to our committee members to visit Ghana. We have formally accepted this invitation and see this as a unique opportunity to honour a personal invitation by a sitting Head of State, to engage directly with the President, his team, and with the wider Ghanaian public to further our discussions and the relationships built during the Oxford Africa Conference.

The Society would like to strategically use this visit from 9th - 19th September, 2018 as an opportunity to engage more meaningfully with Ghana, now and into the future. We would like to network with Ghanaian Oxford Alumni during the visit to strengthen alumni relations and build a mentorship network for prospective students. The delegation would also like to visit selected schools and universities for academic motivation and exchange, and will also seek to visit places of historical significance in Ghana to engage with her culture and traditions, towards an increased understanding of Ghana’s role and our unified duty to develop Africa. We also plan to connect with Ghanaian individuals, philanthropists, and corporates to inform them of our Annual Oxford Africa Conference, and our ongoing Scholarships and Access Program which seeks to widen access for more Africans and Ghanaians to Oxford, irrespective of their means and social backgrounds.

As this year is the 60th Anniversary of the Oxford Africa Society (est. 1958), we want to take the opportunity to celebrate the purpose and impact of the society, and also while in Ghana, highlight the contributions of alumni. One of our main events on this trip will be our Alumni, Friends, and Freshers soiree on the evening of Friday 14th September, 2018, during which we will share the following:

  1. 60 Years of AfriSoc: The History and Impact of the Society since its foundations during the African Independence Movements era.
  2. AfriSoc Now and in the Future: Our Vision for the Year and Hope for the Future.
  3. Current Student-Life Insights and On-campus Opportunities for Incoming Students.
  4. Strategies for Strengthening Relations with Alumni in Ghana and Across Africa.
  5. Opportunities for Institutional Level Partnership with the Oxford Africa Society.
  6. Opportunities for Partnerships on our Annual Oxford Africa Conference.
  7. Opportunities for Partnerships on our Scholarships and Access Program.

In attendance we will have our other distinguished alumni, incoming students (freshers) and potential individual and corporate partners for the society. We are delighted by the opportunity to meet you, and to have you grace our occasion, and we look forward to an overall successful trip to Ghana. Thank you.

Yours Sincerely,

Papa Kojo Botsio (President - 2018/2019)

Ndjodi Ndeunyema (President - 2017/2018)
