GreenCycle: Safe Disposal and Recycling of Electronic Waste in Developing Cities

Blessing Asante is an environmental sustainability advocate dedicated to solving the urgent challenge of electronic waste in developing cities. Growing up in Accra, Ghana, he witnessed firsthand the harmful effects of informal e-waste dumping on both people and the environment. Seeing children play near burning cables and families exposed to toxic fumes sparked his deep commitment to finding safer, healthier solutions for waste management.

Driven by a passion for cleaner communities, Blessing has devoted his work to tackling the growing problem of electronic waste through practical, community-based solutions. He founded GreenCycle Ghana, a social enterprise focused on promoting responsible e-waste collection and recycling in urban neighborhoods. Under his leadership, GreenCycle has organized dozens of e-waste collection drives, removing harmful waste from streets, markets, and waterways, and ensuring safe recycling and disposal.

Blessing believes that environmental change must start with awareness. He regularly holds workshops and community dialogues to educate the public about the dangers of improper e-waste disposal and the benefits of recycling. He has engaged schools, youth groups, and local leaders to champion environmental stewardship, inspiring a new generation of waste-conscious citizens.

At the heart of Blessing’s work is a commitment to creating solutions that uplift marginalized communities. He collaborates with informal e-waste workers to provide training on safer recycling practices, helping to protect their health while preserving their livelihoods. Through these partnerships, he envisions building a more inclusive recycling industry that recognizes and supports the vital role of informal workers.

Blessing’s vision extends beyond reducing waste—he sees e-waste recycling as an opportunity to drive economic empowerment and environmental restoration. His work continues to challenge the status quo, proving that with innovation, collaboration, and determination, developing cities can turn an environmental crisis into a catalyst for sustainable development.
