Dr. Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu is a renowned Pediatrician, advocate, and
philanthropist dedicated to improving healthcare, particularly in cancer awareness and treatment, across Nigeria and beyond. As the First Lady of Kebbi State, she has leveraged her platform to champion women’s health, maternal care, and education, making a lasting impact on underserved communities.
With a medical background, Dr. Bagudu has been instrumental in bridging the gap between policy and practice in cancer care. She is a fierce advocate for early
detection, treatment access, and patient support, particularly for women battling
breast and cervical cancer. As the founder and driving force behind the Medicaid
Cancer Foundation, she has spearheaded numerous awareness campaigns, free
screening programs, and advocacy initiatives to ensure that cancer is no longer a
death sentence for those without financial means.
Beyond Nigeria, Dr. Bagudu’s influence extends to global health leadership. She
plays a key role in international cancer organizations, She was elected as a member of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) board in 2018. She also sits on various committees and TWGs such as WHO’s Global Breast Cancer Initiative, Nigerian National Cancer Control program, First Ladies against cancer (FLAC).
Working to shape policies that prioritize cancer care in Africa. Her work highlights the intersection of healthcare, gender equity, and policy change, making her a crucial voice in the fight for better cancer treatment infrastructure.
As a mother, physician, and advocate, Dr. Zainab exemplifies the power of women’s leadership in transforming healthcare systems. Dr. Bagudu’s dedication and expertise led to her being elected President-Elect of the Union of International Cancer Control (UICC). In 2024, Dr. Zainab Shinkafi Bagudu made history by becoming the first African President-Elect of the UICC. This prestigious position recognizes her prominent advocacy for cancer control in Nigeria and her significant contributions to the global fight against the disease.
She is a devoted grandmother, and enjoys nature walks in her spare time.
