Yvonne Zou

Yvonne is a Doctoral Researcher in Archaeology at the University of Oxford, specialising in the application of materials science and geochemistry in archaeology. Her research focuses on the provenance of medieval copper and copper alloys at Unguja Ukuu, East Africa, employing lead isotope and trace element analysis to investigate long-distance trade networks in the Western Indian Ocean. By integrating scientific methodologies with historical inquiry, she challenges Eurocentric narratives of early globalisation, emphasising the agency of African coastal communities in shaping technological and economic exchanges.
