Hon. Fatoumatta Njai
Biography
Hon. Fatoumatta Njai is a Member of the National Assembly of The Gambia, currently serving her second term as one of only three elected female members. She chairs the Gender and Children’s Welfare Committee, sits on the Human Rights Committee, as well as the Finance and Public Accounts Committee.
Hon. Njai is the founder of the Yayi Denton Programme for Youth, Women, and Vulnerable People. A youth and women empowerment program that works to help increase the number of women and youth in decision-making positions across Africa.
In 2022, she tabled a private member’s bill seeking to amend the Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia to enlarge the seats of the National Assembly, reserving more female seats in the National Assembly. She was recently unanimously elected the Secretary of General of the Ecowas Female Parliamentary Association.
Again in December 2023, alongside the speaker of the Ecowas Parliament and two other members, the Association of West African Legislative Correspondence, in collaboration with the Communication Department of the ECOWAS Parliament, in recognition of her contribution towards the economic development, security, peace, and regional integration of the community, awarded her for her open mindedness and true leadership, as well as her contributions to the welfare of women and children in the community.
Fatoumatta holds a degree in politics and international relations from the University of Kent at Canterbury, a postgraduate diploma in law from the College of Law in London, and an MBA from the University of Edinburgh. She is the other of three beautiful children.
