Independent Journalist & Documentary Filmmaker

Hopewell Rugoho-Chin’ono is an award-winning Zimbabwean journalist, documentary filmmaker, and anti-corruption activist with more than three decades of experience reporting on politics, governance, and social justice across Africa.

He is a Harvard University Nieman Fellow and an African Leadership Institute Tutu Fellow at the Saïd Business School, reflecting his engagement with global leadership and policy development networks.

He has built a significant digital presence, engaging millions of followers through incisive commentary on governance, democracy, and accountability, grounded in a strong belief that journalism must serve the public interest.

Trained in journalism in the early 1990s, he is widely recognised for fearless investigative reporting and a consistent commitment to holding power to account, often at personal risk. His work has helped shape public debate and policy discussions across the African continent.

In 2008, he was named African Journalist of the Year for his documentary Pain in My Heart, which examined the human impact of HIV/AIDS through an interview with the late musician Oliver Mtukudzi. He later received the 2020 African Journalist Award for his COVID-19 corruption investigations and the 2022 United Nations International Anti-Corruption Award.

Beyond journalism, Chin’ono is a prominent advocate for democracy, accountability, and media freedom. He has spoken at international forums and institutions, and his career is featured in Professor Anthony Feinstein’s book Moral Courage, which highlights journalists demonstrating exceptional bravery in the face of adversity. He remains one of Africa’s most influential investigative journalists, committed to truth, accountability, and the defence of democratic values.
