Kweku Awotwi

Board Chairman, United Bank for Africa (Ghana) Ltd

Kweku A. Awotwi is currently the Board Chairman of United Bank for Africa Ghana Ltd, Multimedia Group Limited, and PlaySoccer Ghana, the sports-for-development non-profit organization he co-founded in 1999. He previously served as Board Chairman of Stanbic Bank Ghana from 2012 to 2018, and of the Volta River Authority from 2017 to 2021.

An electrical engineer by training, Awotwi began his career in the United States designing integrated circuits for ITT Inc. and RCA/GE. Following the completion of his MBA, he built a distinguished career across the energy and mining sectors. His previous roles include Manager of Business Planning for the Primary Aluminum Unit of Kaiser Aluminum in Oakland, California; Managing Director of New Business and Strategic Planning at Ashanti Goldfields Corporation in Accra and London; Chief Executive Officer of the Volta River Authority from 2009 to 2013; and Executive Vice President of Tullow Oil in London, a role he held until 2020.

Alongside his corporate leadership career, Awotwi has been actively involved in entrepreneurship and infrastructure development. His ventures include co-founding the US$1 billion, 375 MW independent power project Cenpower Generation Company Limited, which has been in commercial operation since 2019; a gold mining company listed in Hong Kong; an Africa-focused oil and gas exploration and production company; and a smart meter manufacturing company established in Northern Nigeria.

Awotwi holds an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in California, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Economics, and Political Science from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.
