Senator Edwin Watenya

Sifuna, a career lawyer, pursued a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Nairobi graduating in 2006. After receiving his Postgraduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law in 2007, Sifuna did his pupilage at Kairu & McCourt Advocates in Nairobi and was thereafter admitted to the Roll of Advocates in 2008. He started his political career in 2013 and has steadily grown to become a Member of Parliament as the Senator of Nairobi City County, after being elected in the 2022 Kenyan general election. During his short tenure, Sifuna sits as a member of the Road, Transportation and Housing Committee, the County Public Accounts Committee and the Energy Committee.

He has already sponsored various bills in Parliament namely The Office of the County Printer Bill 2022, The Energy Amendment Bill 2023, The Sports Amendment Bill 2023 and The Basic Education Amendment Act 2024, giving significant contributions to important national and local legislation and policies.

Sifuna is a credible public servant with a track record of inspiring change through his legislative, representation and oversight functions. He is ranked among the best performing senators on the floor of the assembly and within the various committees that he serves in. In May 2023, Sifuna was picked to lead the opposition side in bipartisan talks between the Azimio La Umoja Coalition and the ruling Kenya Kwanza Party, that paved way for the constitution of a larger National Dialogue Committee tasked to reach consensus on key contentious issues.

Prior to Sifuna’s achievements in Parliament, he was instrumental in bringing change to the Law Society of Kenya through the OkoaLSK lobby which brought power, accountability and surplus back to the membership. Furthermore, after a hard-hitting 100-day strike, he successfully represented doctors through the team that sought to end the impasse. He passionately believes in creating conducive environments for women and youth to thrive, especially in politics and leadership. In his current position as ODM Secretary-General, Sifuna champions the “He for She” project that is implemented by the party’s Women League.

Sifuna is married with one daughter.
